Premium is not luxury — what we mean when we say it
Premium products feel expensive because they're well-made, not because they're decorated. The distinction matters for how you build software.

Two words, two worlds
When we say a product is premium, we mean it's well-made. The materials are honest, the joints are clean, the failure modes have been thought about, the small things have been finished.
When something is luxury, we mean it signals expense. The materials might be honest or they might be theater. The decoration is louder. The price is higher because it can be, not because it has to be.
Premium and luxury overlap in the market — luxury cars are usually premium cars too — but in software, they pull in opposite directions. Conflating them is how you end up with bloated, over-decorated products that feel impressive in a demo and tedious to use.
What premium looks like in software
Premium software has these tells:
- Loading states are designed. Not absent — designed. The skeleton is the right shape. The transition is the right speed.
- Error messages tell you what to do next. Not "Something went wrong." That's not an error message; that's a shrug.
- Keyboard shortcuts exist and they're discoverable. ⌘K. Always.
- The empty state is useful. A new user opening the app for the first time sees a path, not a void.
- Edge cases are handled, not punted. What happens when the file is 4GB? When the user is offline? When the response is 3 seconds slow?
None of those are decorative. They're craft.
What luxury looks like in software
Luxury software has different tells:
- The marketing site has a 6-second video loop and a custom cursor.
- Every interaction has a sound effect.
- The dashboard has 40 widgets and you can't tell which matter.
- The brand is a verb, a font, and an ideology.
- The pricing page says "Talk to us."
Some of those are fine in moderation. None of them are evidence the product is well-made.
The test
A useful test, when you're shipping a feature: take the most experienced engineer or designer on the team. Ask them, "Where would this break first?" If they have an answer, you haven't finished. If they say "I'm not sure, but probably here, because of X," and you've handled X — that's premium.
Decoration is the last 5%. Get the first 95% right.
